Oral Surgery, North York Dentist

What is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery includes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, teeth and jaws.

Our Sheppard Yorkland dentists always prefer to use the least invasive treatment possible to address a given dental problem. However, in some cases, less invasive treatment options are simply not sufficient and oral surgery is required.

Healing After Surgery with Platelet-Rich Fibrin

At Sheppard Yorkland Dental in North York, our dentists use platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) after many surgical dental procedures, including extractions and wisdom tooth removal, to help accelerate healing. Using PRF after a surgical procedure can also help decrease surgical pain and swelling.

The PRF process involves taking a vial of your blood before the procedure and then putting the blood in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich fibrin layer. The PRF layer is rich in fibrin, platelets and growth factors.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that functions like a natural tooth root. Our dentists place dental implants as part of the process to replace a missing tooth and assist in restoring your smile.  A dental implant, when combined with a tooth replacement such as a crown or bridge, looks and feels much like a natural tooth.

Frenectomy

A frenectomy procedure to eliminate a problematic frenum, a small piece of tissue that connects your cheeks, tongue or lips to your gum area. Our dentists perform frenectomies for babies, children and adults when the frenum is restricting function, commonly referred to as tongue-tied, lip-tied or cheek-tied.

Tooth Extractions

Although our team believes that it's always preferable to save a natural tooth, there are some cases where it's not possible. If a tooth is too badly damaged as a result of decay, gum disease or injury, it may need to be extracted by your dentist.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that erupt in the back corners of a typical adult mouth. If your wisdom teeth are causing pain or problems for your oral hygiene, your dentist may recommend removing them to help preserve your oral health.

Bone Grafts

Bone grafts involve transplanting a small piece of bone to repair or regenerate bone in the jaw. This can be necessary when there is not enough bone to support dental implants or other restorative dental procedures.

Sinus Lifts

A sinus lift is a type of bone graft where your dentist adds bone material to the upper back jaw to raise and increase the amount of bone in the sinus area to place a dental implant.
